As you know, on October 5th, under a beautiful night sky in the garden of the Oakland Museum of California, our community came together to celebrate Outdoor Afro during the 3rd Annual #GlampOut Gala.
To the sounds of The MEGA Cats, our sold-out crowd gathered to break bread and raise funds to advance Outdoor Afro’s goals for 2018 — all while doubling down on #BlackJoy!
Honoring and celebrating our leaders is always a highlight of the evening, and the following community members were recognized for their leadership:
- Leader of the Year: Adrienne Troy-Frazier of South Carolina
- Partner of the Year: KEEN Footwear
- Lifetime Achievement: Author and Poet, Camille Dungy
Without the generosity of people and partners who support our work, Outdoor Afro would not be where we are today – a national non-profit that is a force in the outdoor industry!
We were proud to share an inside look into the Outdoor Afro Leadership Training. A training that you have supported that has allowed us to create more leaders than ever before; now spanning nearly 30 states!
We then moved into the paddle-raising portion of the evening under the wonderful auctioneering of Michael Tate, and as a result, the event broke its previous record by raising $198,675! These funds will allow Outdoor Afro to continue to move the needle of Black connection and leadership in nature by growing our successful #HealingHike campaign, expanding our Blackpacking program, and training our next cohort of Outdoor Afro leaders.
For seven years, I’ve invested in Outdoor Afro because I believe and live our mission to celebrate and inspire Black leadership and connections in the outdoors. I have found personal fulfillment and enrichment in working with Rue and the entire team of more than 100 individuals nationwide that we’ve trained together. When Quincy was born, my relationship with this organization deepened. Outdoor Afro exists to provide the safety that I need and that my son needs.
